Google Chrome OS

So the Goog had a press conference today about Chrome OS. It looks nifty, but I’m not entirely sold. I like the web centric OS. They pretty much expect you to use the Chrome Computer only for the internet. It’s useless unless you’re online. My question is… WHY?!?! I ride the bus, the train, and fly. I am away from a wifi, 3G, or Edge connection quite a bit. I like having movies, music, audio books, and games on my iPod. It keeps me entertained when I cant go online. Are they expecting us to buy this OS on a netbook and not use the netbook when not online?

I could be wrong, but from the live blog I followed today and the video I just saw, it doesn’t seem like you can do anything with out internet. The live blog showed that there is a file manager but its just another Chrome Tab. Maybe I’m old school but I think off line content is important and a ways away from going away. Granted I’m online a lot, but it’s those few moments in the day where I rely on, mainly media, saved locally. I don’t really care about documents and crap. You can store that stuff online. That basically means I can’t work while traveling, which is awesome. However, I want to listen to my music and watch my movies when I’m not online.

Like I said, I could be wrong, but it seems like Chrome OS made a big assumption that there is no offline world. We’re not far from a completely wireless society. We’re not that close either. With that said, I’ll probably buy a copy and put it on this garbage PC my bankrupt company so politely gave us as “parting gifts”.
