The Big Fresno Fair

October 29th, 2009

Over the weekend of October 9th, I went to Fresno, CA. Say what you want, we all have jokes about Fresno. Most of them are true. I had never seen that many McCain/Palin stickers in one location till I went to Fresno. Fresno has a few redeeming qualities: the Mexican food is as authentic as it gets, Suds in the City Beer Festival, and newly added to my list, THE BIG FRESNO FAIR.

Yeah man, this is not your grandparent’s fair, this is the real deal. This fair had huge park for the kids. I’m talking a massive pirate ship with slides, a jungle with rope bridges, all the games that a fair should have plus more.

The rides were pretty much a mini six flags. There were your staples, a Ferris wheel, the Yo Yo, a mini coaster and the thing that you spin around in that sticks you to the wall, and a freaking Bungee jump site. Yeah a Bungee jump site. I didn’t jump because I didn’t think my stomach could handle it. I’ll get tPGoato food in a second.

They had a whole live stock area with best in show animals from pigmy goats to lop eared rabbits. All the cows, sheep, and chicken anyone good ever imagine seeing. The funniest part was one kid who as auctioning off his chicken was carrying the chicken around in a KFC box. Priceless.

For shopping… oh man the shopping was nuts. Every As Seen On TV gizmo was there. From my Neckline Slimmer post you must already know that I have soft spot for As Seen On TV stuff. Then there were little stalls with, hats, belt buckles, and wallets. On the other side of that was a full on nursery for your plants and other gardening projects.

To make this joint classy they had an art competition. There were several categories but the easiest way to break it down was painting and photography. Fresno has a ton of talented people out there. I plan on submitting some of my underwater photographs next year. If you are an aspiring artist you can also sell paintings and photographs there too. Yeah I’m definitely going back again.

Now to my favorite part, the food. I love fair food. Yes you have the funnel cake and hot dogs but Fresno took it to another level. I didn’t even have room for a hot dog or a funnel cake. First on the list was two soft tacos. Hands down these were some of the best tacos I have ever eaten. Something was different about these two. The meat was soft and spiced just right but I think the difference was the tortillas. They used corn tortillas like they should but the tortillas weren’t rough and a little gritty like normal corn tortillas. They had the texture of a flour tortilla. I dunno what it was but it was damn good. Well that was the appetizer.

For lunch I had a White Castle Cheeseburger. “So what?”,  you say? So what? This White Castle Cheeseburger, which is delicious on its own, was deep fried. Yeah you read it correctly. DEEP FRIED WHITE CASTLE. Need I say more? Now you know why I didn’t bungee jump.

For desert I topped it off with a little bacon. Bacon is good any time of the day. If you don’t like bacon you must not have any taste buds. Like I’ve said before, Fresno pulled out the fireworks for this show. Fuggin chocolate dipped bacon. Impressive. Now it tasted like chew salty chocolate. So it wasn’t spectacular. But seriously, where else do you find this stuff, nowhere but the BIG FRESNO FAIR.

So if you’ve read anything that interests you please visit http://www.fresnofair.com/ I swear you won’t be let down. They also have musical guests. I did not get to check any of them out. But I’m sure The Big Fresno fair will put on a good show.
